A harness, in BDSM and fetish contexts, is a configuration of straps, rope, or other material worn on the body to create a decorative, symbolic, or restraining garment, and encompasses a wide range of styles from full-body bondage harnesses to targeted pieces worn on specific body parts. Harnesses are made from a variety of materials: leather harnesses, deeply rooted in the traditions of the leather and fetish communities, are among the most iconic and are worn both as functional bondage equipment and as objects of erotic identity; rope harnesses tied in the shibari or kinbaku tradition are simultaneously structural and aesthetic, combining the practical function of restraint with a visual art form; and synthetic harnesses in neoprene, nylon webbing, or rubber are popular for their durability and ease of cleaning.

Common configurations include the chest harness, which wraps around the torso and can serve as a load-bearing point for suspension or other restraint; the full-body harness, which covers the torso, thighs, and sometimes the arms; the leg harness, worn around one or both thighs; the head harness, which encases the head and often incorporates attachment points for a gag or blindfold; and the pelvic harness, used to hold a strap-on or similar implement in place.

In bondage contexts, harnesses provide structural attachment points for restraints and suspension lines. In fetish and fashion contexts, they are worn for their aesthetic and psychological resonance – the sensation of being held, enclosed, or marked by a harness carries significant meaning for many wearers. Harnesses are also widely worn as identity and community signals at leather bars, fetish events, and kink gatherings, conveying participation in those communities and serving as a form of embodied erotic expression understood by those within the culture.
