Luci BlackwellA chest harness is a configuration of rope, leather straps, or other material tied or fastened around the torso to create a decorative, functional, or restraining harness worn on the upper body. In rope bondage and shibari, the chest harness is one of the most foundational and widely practised ties, and many more complex suspension and partial suspension configurations are built upon it as a load-bearing base.
The most iconic chest harness in Japanese rope bondage tradition is the Takate Kote – also known as the box tie – which binds the arms behind the back while the rope passes around the chest in a distinctive double-column pattern, though many simpler chest harness configurations exist for those newer to rope. Beyond functionality and restraint, chest harnesses have significant aesthetic and symbolic value: they accentuate the body's lines, draw the eye, and are often tied as a standalone decorative element for photographic purposes or for wear under clothing as a form of ongoing tactile connection to a partner.
Leather chest harnesses, commonly associated with the fetish and leather communities, are often worn as fashion statements in club and event settings, signalling participation in those communities and serving as a form of body adornment. When used for restraint, chest harnesses must be applied with an understanding of anatomy and safety: the area around the brachial plexus nerve – which runs through the armpit and upper arm – is particularly vulnerable to nerve compression, and tingling, numbness, or weakness in the hands or arms is a sign that the harness must be loosened or removed immediately.
Regular communication during rope scenes involving a chest harness is essential, and the rigger should check in on sensation and circulation throughout the tie. Quick-release tools such as EMT scissors or rope cutters should always be within easy reach.
