Safe, Sane, and Consensual — a framework coined in the 1980s that became the first widely adopted guiding principle for BDSM practice. The idea was simple: kink should be as physically and emotionally safe as possible, undertaken with sound judgment by everyone involved, and fully agreed to. Still widely referenced, though some practitioners find that RACK better accounts for the inherent risks in activities that can't be made fully safe.
