A word or signal agreed upon before a scene that, when used, pauses or stops play immediately. The traffic light system is the most common: green to continue, yellow to slow down or check in, red to stop completely. When speech isn't possible — in a gag, for instance — a non-verbal signal like dropping an object serves the same purpose.
