Funishment is a portmanteau of "fun" and "punishment" — a consequence administered within a D/s or brat dynamic that is nominally delivered as discipline for misbehaviour but is, in practice, something the submissive actively enjoys, secretly desires, or has specifically engineered through bratting in order to receive. The term captures a particular theatrical quality inherent to brat dynamics: unlike genuine discipline, which aims to correct behaviour through a consequence the submissive finds genuinely uncomfortable or motivating, funishment operates as a kind of mutually enjoyed game in which the pretence of punishment is part of the pleasure.

A submissive might deliberately break a rule, push against a limit, or behave with pointed defiance specifically because they know the "consequence" will be a spanking they wanted, a restriction they find exciting, or an activity they have been angling toward. The dominant's role in funishment varies considerably by practitioner: some dominants lean enthusiastically into the theatrics, playing the stern authority figure while fully acknowledging the game being played; others maintain a careful distinction between funishment — which they treat as a form of play — and real discipline, ensuring the submissive understands the meaningful difference between a consequence they enjoy and one designed to actually correct behaviour.

Many experienced D/s practitioners argue that while funishment is an enjoyable and valid form of play, an exclusively funishment-based discipline dynamic can erode the structure and meaning of the broader D/s framework if genuine consequences lose their weight entirely. The balance between playful funishment and effective discipline is something each dynamic must work out according to the desires, temperament, and goals of both partners. At its best, funishment is a delightful expression of the playful, theatrical dimension of brat culture — silly, charged, and mutually enjoyed by everyone involved.
