Feminization — also spelled feminisation — is the practice of dressing, presenting, or styling a person, typically a male-identified or AMAB (assigned male at birth) individual, in clothing, makeup, hairstyles, and mannerisms conventionally associated with femininity. It is practiced in a wide variety of contexts and for a wide range of reasons: some people engage with feminization as a form of gender play, crossdressing, or personal gender expression; others practise it within a D/s dynamic as a form of submission or humiliation play, in which being feminized is experienced as a powerful expression of surrender or identity dissolution; and others simply find joy, arousal, or a sense of authentic self in presenting in a more feminine style.

In BDSM contexts, feminization is often associated with sissy play — a subgenre in which the person being feminized may be dressed in overtly stereotyped or exaggerated feminine clothing such as frilly lingerie, maids' uniforms, or pink dresses, and may be assigned feminine pronouns or diminutive names as part of the roleplay. The psychological appeal of feminization varies enormously between practitioners: for some, it is deeply connected to gender identity and the opportunity to explore a feminized self in a safe and sanctioned context; for others, it is primarily erotic and entirely unconnected to any gender identity exploration.

It is important not to conflate feminization as kink or play with gender identity: someone who enjoys feminization as play is not necessarily transgender, gender-fluid, or any specific gender identity, and assumptions about a person's identity based on their kink preferences should always be avoided. Feminization should always be practiced with full consent and with sensitivity to the psychological dimensions it may engage for the person involved.
