Luci BlackwellCollaring is the act or ceremony of placing a collar on a submissive, and within BDSM culture it carries a weight of significance that sets it apart from the simple act of putting on a piece of jewellery. A collaring ceremony may be a private, intimate moment between two people or an elaborate ritual performed in front of witnesses and community members, complete with spoken vows, readings, and the exchange of words about the nature of the dynamic being formalized. The practice draws on both the leather community's long tradition of formalized relationship structures and on the wider BDSM community's recognition that some D/s relationships carry a depth of commitment and intentionality that deserves acknowledgement and celebration.
Prior to a formal collaring, many dynamics progress through earlier stages: a collar of consideration signals that the dominant is evaluating whether to enter a formal dynamic with the submissive, and a training collar indicates that the relationship is established but the submissive is still developing within it. The decision to formally collar someone – or to accept a collar — is rarely taken quickly; it typically follows extended periods of communication, negotiation, trust-building, and a deepening of the power exchange dynamic. The collar itself is often chosen with great care to reflect the nature of the relationship: it may be a custom-made leather piece, a lockable metal collar, or something more discreet that can be worn in everyday life. For many in the community, the collaring ceremony is as emotionally significant as a marriage ceremony, and some practitioners incorporate formal vows about care, respect, obedience, and the responsibilities each person holds toward the other.
Uncollaring – the removal of a collar at the end of a dynamic – can be a deeply emotional and grief-laden process that warrants its own care, acknowledgement, and aftercare from all involved.
