Luci BlackwellChastity, within BDSM and kink contexts, refers to the deliberate restriction of a person's sexual activity, arousal expression, or ability to orgasm – either through psychological agreement, behavioral rules, or the use of a physical device. It is most commonly practiced within dominant/submissive dynamics, though it is also enjoyed by solo practitioners and couples outside of formal power exchange.
The appeal of chastity is multifaceted: for the person in chastity, the experience of enforced denial can heighten arousal over time, intensify emotional focus on a partner or keyholder, and create a profound sense of submission and vulnerability. For the keyholder – the person who controls access to orgasm or release – chastity can be a powerful expression of dominance and a form of ongoing control that extends well beyond individual scenes. Chastity arrangements range from brief denial periods of a few hours or days to long-term agreements lasting weeks, months, or even longer, depending on the desires and negotiated terms of those involved. Psychological chastity, practiced without a device, relies entirely on the submissive's self-discipline and the trust between parties; physical chastity involves the use of a chastity cage, belt, or other restraint device to physically prevent access to genitalia.
The practice is closely linked to orgasm control, orgasm denial, and ruined orgasms, and is often incorporated into tease-and-denial play. Within male chastity specifically – one of the most widely practiced forms – the submissive partner typically wears a cage over the penis, with the dominant holding a physical key. Female chastity belts also exist, though they present greater design challenges due to anatomy and hygiene considerations. Communication and regular check-ins are essential in any chastity arrangement, particularly long-term ones, to ensure physical health, emotional well being, and ongoing consent are all maintained. Hygiene considerations are equally important when chastity devices are worn for extended periods, and should be addressed as part of any long-term arrangement.
